Origins and development

Heger Cemetery opened in 1925. The larger funeral hall on Rheiner Landstraße was built in the 1930s and is listed as a historic building. The Old Chapel in section 1 was renovated in 2008/2009. Memorial grave areas and the bell tower are important stops for exploring its history; the adjoining Jewish cemetery is separately administered.

The cemetery was established in 1925. The cemetery is in Weststadt, on Rheiner Landstraße, at Rheiner Landstraße 168, 49078 Osnabrück. Its area is approximately 27 hectares.

Design and present-day character

The 27-hectare grounds combine 17 burial sections, two chapel areas and several memorial grave areas. The large funeral hall seats 166 people; the Old Chapel near Lotter Kirchweg seats about 30. Choose an entrance that suits your appointed hall or burial section.

Read this character description together with the development of Heger Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.

Connect the account with the grounds

The cemetery map contains 12 named places for Heger Cemetery. Among them are Entrance 1, Old chapel, Bell tower. Use these names to relate the historical account to locations visible during a visit, without assuming that every historical feature has its own marker.
